Economies and Diseconomies: Estimating Electricity Cost Functions
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents estimates of the variable cost function of electricity generation. The cost function is estimated using a two dimensional definition of capacity utilization. Because electricity cannot be conveniently stored, generation facilities follow the load across demand cycles. Capacity utilization can be captured empirically in two ways. One is generation relative to capacity when a unit is connected to the system; the other is the percent of time the unit is disconnected. The estimated cost function shows that both dimensions affect average cost, which generally declines as capacity utilization increases. ∗ Thanks go to Skip Sauer, David Dismukes, Roger Betancourt, and workshop participants at Clemson for helpful comments. Multiple unit auctions with economies and diseconomies of scale
This paper discusses multiple unit auctions for industrial procurement where the cost structures of suppliers capture economies and diseconomies of scale caused by the nature of the production cost and the opportunity value of suppliers capacities. The problem of winner determination and demand allocation is proven to be NP-complete. We propose a binary tree algorithm with bounds (BTB) which ef...
متن کاملPotential Cost Savings from School District Consolidation: a Case Study of New York
The early 1990s have been a time of fiscal stress for local governments in the United States with school districts particularly hard hit. This article presents the results of a detailed study of potential cost savings from consolidation of New York school districts. It extends past research on consolidation by developing a theoretical framework which distinguishes several dimensions of economie...
متن کاملScale Economies and the Dynamics of Recurring Auctions1
We analyze the dynamics of a game of sequential bidding in the presence of stochastic scale effects in the form of stochastic economies or diseconomies of scale. We show that economies give rise to declining expected equilibrium prices, whereas the converse is not generally true. Moreover, first– and second–price auctions are not always revenue equivalent. Indeed, economies of scale make the se...
متن کاملPublic Forest Land Allocation: A Dynamic Spatial Perspective on Environmental Timber Management
The complicated process of public forest land allocation involves competing economies of scale. While harvesting cost economies of scale may benefit harvesters, where average costs decline as contiguous harvested acreage increases, larger harvested areas can generate diseconomies in terms of environmental and ecosystem damage. This paper extends existing timber rotation models to more completel...

OBJECTIVE To apply the economic theory of economies of scope to the home healthcare industry. DATA SOURCES Data on 488 observations obtained from the Cost Report (HCFA Form 1728-86) of all Connecticut state-licensed, Medicare-certified home health agencies. STUDY DESIGN The Cost Report was the primary source of data for this study. Information on total cost, scope, and other related factors...
